Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Debt collection

I'm getting married and just found out that my credit score is only fair and that I have a couple of unpaid debts. MY new to be husband has good credit and I don't want this to effect him. will my rateing hurt his and will the debts go after him for my debts even though this is before we are married?

Re: Debt collection

WA is a community property state. A third-party creditor can go after each spouse, or both to collect a debt owed by one or the other.

Keep your debts separate so as not to affect his credit score. Keep your own checking account and make payments from that checking account.

Your new credit score could improve when you get married.

Hope that helps. Elizabeth Powell
