Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Debt Verification and Interest

I denied owing a sum to collection

agencies and asked for proof. They did not

provide it, but the balance keeps jumping

higher and they reported me as living in

Nevada, not Washington where I currently

reside. Is this legal? The credit card was

obtained in another state. Which statute

applies?

Re: Debt Verification and Interest

The statue you need to review is the Fair Credit Collections Act. Their actions by refusing to acknowledge your denial of the validity of the alleged debt are not "illegal" per se, but the issue is likely dragging down your credit score. Google for FCCA, see what you find, and file a complaint with Washington's Attorney General regarding the collector.

As always, it is vastly more effective to do this in writing.

Hope this helps - Powell
