Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Old debts, new marriage

I have old debts from Alaska and now I live in Washington and married a Washington resident. An Alaskan collection agency is trying to collect MY debt from my new husband. I wasn't even married to him when I got these debts. Can they do this? Will it effect his credit? What can I do to stop it?

Re: Old debts, new marriage

Yes they can do this: WA is a community property state and you and your new husband are jointly and severally liable for your debt (and his debt).

Yes, it can affect his credit. Unpaid obligations may show up on his report, depending on whether or not the two of you open accounts as a married couple (where you promise both incomes as a basis to be considered for credit).

You can pay it as presented or negotiate a repayment with the creditor. Please take a look at budhibbs dot com before sending a collection agency money or your bank account information.

Hope this helps. Powell
