Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Harassment from Bill Collectors

I have been legally separated for 5 years and it was converted to a dissolution over 2 years ago. My ex-husband's bill collectors are now calling me both at home and at work. These are for debts he incurred after the divorce. How can I get them to stop calling me? Thank you!

Re: Harassment from Bill Collectors

When you get a call from your ex's bill collectors its irritating and frustrating and scary. But you know that - what you asked was how to make it stop.

Get the collector's name and a physical address.

Go to the Courthouse, get copies of your divorce decree, make copies and send it to each of the three major credit reporting agencies for them to attach to your credit report, and send a copy to each collection agency that calls you.

When you write to the collection agency, ask them to quit pestering you, and send a copy of the letter to the AG's office and tell the AG what the collector is doing.

If that doesn't work fast enough for you, hire a lawyer to go after your ex to enforce his obligations under the decree, and hold you harmless, and your attorney can (and likely will) be awarded his or her attorney fees to be paid by your ex.

Hope this helps. Powell
