Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Medical Debt Collections

When a someone from a medical debt collection company calls, what information are they required to provide?

I had someone from a medical debt collection company call me and they told me it was illegal to send me an invoice or tell me the nature of the bill. They just told me the amount I owed, the date I was billed, and the last name of person I owed.

Now I have a summons to pay up. With the invoice marked as evidence, I called my insurance company and found it was a glitch in their system and so they are paying the Doctor his money. Now I'm stuck with this lawsuit...

Re: Medical Debt Collections

If you request in writing within 30 days of first contact that the collection agency "validate" your debt, they must provide evidence that the amount is owed.

It sounds from your post that the amount isn't actually owed, but that you have been sued anyway. You MUST respond to the lawsuit within 20 days of getting it, or you risk getting a default judgment against you. This is very important. You should contact an attorney, or go to a legal clinic for help with drafting the answer.
