Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington
Responsibility for medical bills
Am I responsible for paying my deceased spouse's medical bills? He passed away 3 years ago, and although I thought we had settled on an amount, which I paid, it has now gone to collection.

Re: Responsibility for medical bills
You are NOT responsible for the bills of any person who is deceased.
The collector needs to be advised that the debt is for a person who is no longer alive.
You don't describe anything else about this situation - whether there was a probate or not, and whether or not you advised the collectors that your spouse was deceased.
You can get a consultation with a local attorney who handles probates by contacting your local bar association.
Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
