Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

small claims court

I just completed a deck and had a contract for the customer to pay at completion. What do I do if the customer won't pay and the amount is 2,400.00. I am not licensed and there was not permit in the state of washington.

Re: small claims court

Then you have no remedy. Washington is really tough on unlicensed contractors. If you sue them to recover your pay, they can defend merely by saying that you are not licensed.

The rules changed this summer, and you have to be a registered contractor to do any contracts in WA.

The statute starts by declaring that the standard is strict liability, which means you are deemed to know what the law says and obey it.

Sorry. You need to review the L&I website and get your license.
