Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

Accused of Embezzlement from Business

The owner of the business I used to work for, accused me of embezzlement of funds. I used the company business card, with the owner's permission, and she said she didn't give me permission to do so. The owner is a family member. I am a signer on the company business card. She says the embezzlement started in 2001. What are my options? I quit working at the business. She just accused me of this theft. It sounds like ''he said, she said'' kind of stuff. What could happen? Can you please advise.

Re: Accused of Embezzlement from Business

I am sorry that your family relation has soured. As to what might happen, I do not know enough to say. She can either bring criminal charges against you or sue you or both. I'm not sure what is the issue with using the business card. Using the card would not be embezzlement, which is stealing of funds or money, but more like fraud. It is hard to say what your options are without knowing the case against you. What is she saying you did? Took money out of a cash register? Wrote company checks for personal debt? If it truly is "he said, she said" kind of stuff then you are in a good position. Don't change that by talking with anyone, including police, about this case. We really need to think of what other evidence she might come up with, or even try to fabricate, that shows you did something. Contact me directly if you have more questions.
