I was charged with theft in the 3rd degree but I paid for the items I was attempting to steal

Excellent. But I'm confused, if you paid for them why do you say you were attempting to steal them? Do you mean that the items you were accused of attempting to steal? If that's what you mean and you have proof you paid it should be an easy case for you to win.
