Continuance
How do I go about filing a continuance? I have a pre-trial hearing for a hit and run on the 25th and dopn't have a lawyer yet.

Well, you could hire a lawyer by then. I'm free on the 25th. Otherwise, you go into court and explain to the judge why you do not have a lawyer yet. Tell her/him you are willing to waive your right to a speedy trial to have more time to get a lawyer. The courts usually grant one continuance for the purpose of getting a lawyer. However, if there have been other continuances for other reasons the judge will probably deny your request.
