Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington
My cousin recently recieved a shoplifting ticket in Tacoma, WA. The items lifted totalled $87 and he has signed a statement admitting to the offense in the store. The police officer ordered him to make a court date. He is over the age of 18. What are the possible consequences for this offense? including cost for fines and such?
1 Answer from Attorneys
The possible consequences are up to a year in jail and a $5000 fine. The actual outcome will depend on the strength of the case against him, his criminal record, possibly what he was shoplifting (items used for making illegal drugs or explosives are obviously dealt with more harshly), and a number of other possible factors that are so numerous that you'll need to consult with an attorney to really know. He'll need an attorney anyway so that is who you should ask.
