how can I find a court appointed lawyer that will be on my side in lewis county

Your court appointed lawyer is automatically on your side. The question is how hard is he/she going to work for you. America is the land of "you get what you pay for." But many public defenders are guided by a sincere desire to help the underdog. What I recommend to people who come to me but don't have money to hire me on the case is to retain me for a consultation ($200) after they've talked to their PD. That way you can get a second opinion and see if it looks like this PD is really working for you. Also, sometimes the tips and information I give you makes them work harder because they see you know something about the system and are also going to work on your case too.
