Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

Criminal Summons

I recvd a Criminal Summons by mail & understand I need to appear at Superior Court at the time/date given. I am guilty of charges cited: Theft in the 1st degree btwn 5/10/05-11/29/06-01 Count(9A.56.020/0301A);Forgery- 02 Count;Forgery-03 Count;Forgery -04;Forgery-05 Count;Forgery-06 Count (9A.60.0201AB).This is my first time doing anything like this on the job. I'm nervous and scared because I don't know what to expect at the appearance or what I need to do.I have been out of work (at the job I was terminated from in 12/06. )I was pregnant at the time of termination and have been out of work since this time. I have an infant that I nurse and 2 teenage children and unfortunately a marriage that is ''rocky'' right now. I don't have an attorney and don't have the financial means to afford one. Will they appoint counsel to me at the appearance? Will they sentence me at the appearance and have to go to jail then? What will/could happen to my children(& my nursing infant?) I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm scared-I was stupid to do these acts. I'm not sure what the process is and/or what to expect. Also, will this Court cause# appear in my records now & appear whan background checks are done when eventually applying for a job?

Re: Criminal Summons

First of all. Thank you for the question. Try not to worry. You will get a court appointed attorney. Second, don't say things like "I am guilty of charges cited." A case is more a question of evidence against you than honesty on your part. I understand you probably feel bad. Talk to your attorney about your feelings and no one else.

You have some fairly serious charges against you. Even if you had the best attorney, I'd be surprised if you walked away from this with nothing on your record. I understand times are tough but I seriously recommend hiring an attorney that can dedicate the time your case needs.

At the appearance, you want to enter a plea of not guilty. This will give you an opportunity to at least speak with your public defender. You could have a bail set on your release. However, it looks like the charges are old and don't involve any violence.

You want to bring things that show you aren't a flight risk. A copy of your mortgage, pictures of your kids, a summary of family you have in the area, anything else making it unlikely you'll flee from the charges. Showing up for court is the most important demonstration of your intent to face the case.

You will have a few weeks, or months, to review your case with your attorney. You can go over the likely consequences and plan how you will face them.
