How long can a person be detained without being formally charged but detained on investigation

Re: detainment time w/o a charge
Short answer (for WA state): 72 hours. If no formal charges are filed withing 72 hours, the detainee must be released without conditions. From that point on, the statute of limitations applies to determine the deadline for filing charges.
This answer does not apply to INS detainees.
