Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington
Domestic Violence
I hit my sister. She called the police and I left before they got there. My mother thinks I should turn myself in but I don't want to go to jail. What should I do?

Re: Seek Legal Counsel . . . in person
First, you should not make confessions online. The odds of this post being used against you are extremely slim, but possible. The point is that you should seek legal counsel. Domestic violence charges have long lasting consequences for employment, travel and firearm possession.
You can consult an attorney prior to contacting law enforcement officers. Undoubtedly, the advice will be that you not make statements to law enforcement officers.
You have not said that a warrant has been issued. If so, an attorney can help you appear and secure release.
If no warrant has been issued or charges filed, law enforcement officers may or may not arrest you. If they only want you to come in to give a statement, you could still be arrested.
If you cannot afford an attorney, you will have to contact the court to apply for an attorney. (This may be a bit complicated if charges have not been filed.)
An attorney will help you evaluate the case and explain your options. There are always alternative dispositions that can help you keep a "clean" record.
Re: Domestic Violence
These matters of domestic violence are very complicated and can have serious consequences. You need to get a lawyer, either private or public defender. If you try and do this yourself, you run the risk of being found guilty and having this on your record for 10 years. Consult with an attorney as soon as possible to discuss your options.
