Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

excessive police force

the police executed a search warrant at our house for drugs &evidence of money laundering. i had both of our dogs by their collars the police refused to let me put them in another room, i was forced to let go of them the police then shot & killed one of them & then told me to put the other dog in another room. we weren't charged with anything we didn't go to jail.they didn't find any evidence of drugs or money laundering. do i have grounds for a lawsuit against the cop that killed my dog?

Re: excessive police force

Probably, as well as against the city, based on the facts you have set forth. You should file a claim with the city (ask the city how to do that) and you might try to settle it yourself. Your damages would at least be the value of the dog as well as emotional distress. An attorney might be able to assist you in obtaining a better settlement.

There would also likely be a civil rights claim for deprivation of your property.
