Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington
fines
I am a recovering addict, I have been clean and sober and out of trouble for 6 years, but there was a lot of fines imposed for several cases and they are all in collections now. I went to treatment and got my life together and now I need to clean up the wreckage of my past. I dont make a lot of money, but I would love to live a normal life. What if anything can I do to clear this up without spending 50,000 or more in interest?

Re: fines
Wow! Congratulations on being clean and sober. That is a lot of fines. Okay, you have a couple of options. The first is bankruptcy. You cannot bankrupt out of court fines but you can clear the interest, collections and added fees. You'll need to talk to a bankruptcy lawyer about this.
The other, depending on the court, is to ask the judge for relief. Some courts will do this and others will not. Most courts impose a one year look back limit after which they will not pull a case out of collections. However, if you have the proof of your treatment and how well you are doing you may be able to get a judge to make an exception in your case.
Let me know if you need further assistance doing this.
