Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

Hi. My friend was just arrested and I was wondering what the process is. At what point should he announce that he would like to speak with a lawyer? What happens after that? How is it different than if you don't say anything?

Every situation is different. General advice is always going to be don't answer any questions or make any statements at all without a lawyer. Ask for a lawyer immediately.

Officers are trained in interrogation, and you don't always know what the agenda is when you are being questioned. You never know when you might inadvertently say something that is going to be damaging to you down the road.
