Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

Information on a level 3 sex offender as far as our rights

I am a leader of a boy scout troop, a biological father of one of my boys wants to start participating in activities within the troop. He has been absent in the boys life until now and is a level 3 sex offender. We have a major event at a school with 100 or so kids. I don't feel comfortable having him at my house for meetings and at this event. I don't know the exact nature of his crime, but would like to know if I have any legal basis to stand by to refuse that he participates at my house or around children.

First, this is a question you need to ask your superiors in the Boy Scouts. I'm sure the organization has clearly-defined policies in this regard.

Second, I would suggest you contact the local sheriff's office to learn what information is available about this man. Level III is very serious and poses a significant threat to society.

If the organization isn't able to provide you with the course of action, ask the sheriff for guidelines.

If you still don't have any direction, go with your instincts and feelings, which seem to be that you don't want him there. But also remember that you have a greater responsibility than just for yourself and your family. What might even be ok in terms of personal interaction/contact with this man may not be allowable when your responsibility is for other people.

Finally, go to him directly and in a straightforward manner tell him of your decision. If he hasn't heard it before, he will need to get used to it. Be sure to go ahead of time to avoid a scene at the time of the event.
