Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

Jury question

One of my Co-workers is a jury foreman for a trial. They aren't sequestered or anything interesting like that. But he comes to work every day and fills us in on all the details of the trial and all the facts and arguements. Then he talks about the trial with everyone who will listen. My question: Is it OK for a Juror to discuss details of the trial with outsiders? Seems to me that it shouldn't be allowed but he seems to glory in having ''inside dope'' on a trial.

Re: Jury question

It is not OK. If the judge were to find out the juror could be held in contempt of court (fined and / or jailed). The jury is suppose to be an independent decision making body. They cannot be independent if they are discussing the case with other people. The juror is free to discuss the case after a verdict is reached.

Re: Jury question

This is not only not OK it is a violation of the court orders given to all of the jurors as the trial goes on. This must be reported to the court where your co-worker is the jury foreman immediately. Why? Because the entire process of deliberation and the jury system itself have been compromised. This affects the defendant's fundamental right to a fair and impartial trial. The trial is now a matter of public record and the orders of the court and judge have been violated. If you want help on how to report this properly, please contact me ASAP. Do not just let this go; this is much more serious than you can imagine.
