First of all, if you paid your rent (did you write a check or have some other way to prove you paid?) they cannot kick you out. Even if you didn't pay your rent, if you have been living there a certain period of time (I'm not sure, I don't do landlord/tenant law, but it may be 30 or 60 days) they have to "evict" you--which is a legal process--and can't just kick you out. You should be calling the police to re-enter your home and claim your things (and potentially to live there until your lease is up or you are evicted). Is the house permitted for 8 people? It is possibly that the landlord is in violation of county or city ordinance.
as for the crime, you cannot stop people from accusing you of things. What you do is make sure you don't make it worse. Do not make a statement to the police. Tell them you want to have a lawyer present. If they question you further tell them you want to have a lawyer present. Do not make any statements to anyone else either (unless they are a lawyer helping you with the case).
Make sure the police have your current mailing address. If the police never contact you, make sure your mailing address is current with the DOL. That way, if the case is filed against you, you will get the court date. Not getting the court date and missing the court date is bad news because then you get a warrant and you get arrested and you go to jail. Otherwise, if you've never been in trouble before, you likely never go to jail on the case. Lastly, you start saving up your money. You may need or want to hire a lawyer. You could have a public defender available to you but some people question their abilities / commitment / time availability. Even if you get and are happy with your public defender, there may be fines ordered in the case.
