Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

mushrooms and minor in possession

my son purchased mushrooms from a ''friend'' at school and is being charged with felony possession. This is his first offense and we followed up with appropriate counselling, etc. I am horrified that he may have a felony record as a result of a stupid one time decision to experiment. What can we expect and should we get a lawyer of our own on board?

Re: mushrooms and minor in possession

By any means, get a lawyer. The consequences of a felony conviction endure long after the conditions of a judgment and sentence have been fulfilled - even for a juvenile.

Do not accept the idea that there are dispositions that "keep it off his record" or "it's as if it never happened.'

For example, a deferred disposition is really no different than a conviction except that the offender can obtain a dismissal a couple of years sooner after completing probation. The offender with a felony drug conviction still loses his driving privilege and gun rights.

Get a lawyer.
