If a person is representing themselves can they have help from a family member before the court

No, the right to self-represent does not confer upon anyone else the right to appear before the bar. I'm sure you've heard this but representing yourself is an error. Hire an attorney or, at a minimum, use the services of the public defender. Feel free to e-mail with the details of your situation if you'd like a free opinion.
