Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington
shoplifting in washington state
I shoplifted last month at the university bookstore. I am nineteen years old with a clean record. I have to go to the municipal court of seattle on may 27. I was wondering what is going to happen to me? Should I plead ''guilty,'' ''not guilty'', or''no contest.'' I am so scared, I do not want this to go on my record, I am a good student and do not want this stupid mistake to affect my future career. Am I eligible for adult diversion? What are the chances this will not show up on my record? Thank you.

Re: shoplifting in washington state
Enter a plea of not guilty and hire/apply for a lawyer.
There are several ways you can likely reach a disposition other than a conviction on your record.
Exxamples:
Compromise of Misdemeanor
Continuance for Dismissal
Stay of Proceedings (essentially the same)
Diversion
Be advised that a Deferred Sentence is nothing but a conviction that you can have dismissed at the end of probation if you fully comply with the judgment and sentence. Until such dismissal, you have a conviction . . . for a crime involving dishonesty.
The fact that the charge has been filed is a record that will last indefinitely; however, closing the case with a dismissal is a worthy goal.

Mr. Ferris mentions many outcomes other than a conviction that can be achieved in your case. I'd be happy to appear on May 27th to assist you for a reasonable price. I very much think we could resolve it at that time in a way that is acceptable to you. Let me now if you'd like my assistance and contact me directly.
