How long does the state have to file theft charges on a stolen cashed money order

At least three years and perhaps longer. There is a discovery rule that extends the statute of limitations. Also, some felonies have longer statute of limitations. So, it depends in part on how the prosecutor files the charges and what you did. If you are concerned about a criminal charge I recommend you consult with an attorney now to see if there is anything you can do to prevent or mitigate criminal charges later. It is worth a few hundred dollars to avoid jail time later.
