Legal Question in DUI Law in Washington

arraigment for dwi

My son was driving back from Oregon, had some dizzy spells, pulled over at a rest stop where troopers handcuffed him and took him to Olympia. His blood test showed no alcohol and his GP found him to be anemic. He has been treated by a neurologist and is under control. He has received an arraignment notice. He cannot afford an attorney. What does he do at the arraignment?

Enter a plea of Not Guilty and apply for a public defender.

You state his blood test showed no alcohol. Did it show anything else? DUI is not restricted to alcohol, but also encompasses prescription and non-prescription drugs. Still, unexpected side-effects of drugs may be a viable defense to a DUI charge. I would agree that your son should go to his arraignment, plead not guilty, and request the services of a public defender.
