Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
18 year old dependent
My daughter has a severe drinking problem. I'm afraid she will kill herself drinking. Is there anything I can do legally to get her into a rehab facility?

Re: 18 year old dependent
If she is competent to make her own decisions, generally, no. But there are ways to effect involuntary commitment if the situation is "grave." you may want to read: RCW 70.96A.140. It describes the criteria as "a person presents a likelihood of serious harm or is gravely disabled as a result of chemical dependency" and describes situations or events that may support seeking an order for involuntary treatment as, "that the person has twice before in the preceding twelve months been admitted for detoxification, sobering services, or chemical treatment." Petitioning for involuntary commitment is a serious decision and you should consult with an evaluation and treatment professional and an attorney to determine whether your daughter fits the criteria. I would caution you that as unpleasant and difficult as this may be to do if you are successful, attempting and failing could be worse.
