Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Abusive husband. I want custody.

I am considering divorce. My husband has been abusive to me physically and emotionally. I have never called the police but my Dr has documented some incidents and I have been to Domestic Violence counselling. My neighbors are also aware of our problems and have seen me in the middle of arguments and abuse. They are willing to testify to what they have witnessed. How can I best prepare for this divorce so I can come away with full custody and he has simply visitation?

Re: Abusive husband. I want custody.

The general rule in Washington is joint custody, but one parent is designated as the residential parent. Several factors including, domestic violence, abusive use of conflict, mental illness, criminal activity, etc. may result in one parent having restrictions on decision making and/or even the form, degree and nature of visitation.

Costs of dissolution of marriage (divorce) vary depending on how hard parties fight and what they fight over.
