See if you can income qualify for the public defender. If you can, go confer with your assigned public defender. If you think you need someone different, you can fire your public defender and they have to get you "conflict counsel" who does not work for the same public defender agency.
If you don't income qualify, do your research and hire the best attorney you can find. The website avvo.com (a v v o ) can be useful to learn more about local attorneys.
