Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

My old attorney fees

I still owe my divorce attorney money. I just got remarried. Can my new husband be responsible legally (a judgement on his credit) for my past bills? My divorce was in Alaska but I now live in Washington with my new husband.

Washington is a community property state, and with certain limited exceptions separate debt that you bring to a new marriage becomes community debt by operation of law.

Thus your new husband could theoretically be responsible for at least half of your debt to your lawyer.

Judgments are the result of litigation. It will not come as a suprise out of the blue; you will have notice and an opportunity to defend.

The Bar has a fee mediation service if you think that might help. You can find them on line at wsba dot org.

Hope this helps. Powell
