Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
Babys father lives in another state with a pending court case
My daughter is a year old and I am wanting to start my child support case. The father lives in Nevada and has another child. No order has been made for that child yet but the mother has filed the paperwork and recieved a court date. I heard something about ''jurisdiction'' so I was curious if the fact that he has an open court case for child support and custody and stuff is any interference in my wanting to start my case. If so where do I go from here?

Re: Babys father lives in another state with a pending court case
You contact the Family Support Division of your county's prosecutor's office.
The fact that another case is opened doesn't affect your case, it just makes him easier to find.
Once he is served process, the Washington Court will have jurisdiction because you and the child live here (presuming you have been here at least six months). There are additional reasons why this court can assert jurisdiction, but that's the bottom line.
Just because he has another case elsewhere does not preclude you from commencing the process here.
Hope this helps, Elizabeth Powell
