Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
name change
My husband's birth certificate lists a different name than the one that he uses (and that he has his ss # under). When he received a copy of his birth certificate from his mother, it also was clear that he has been spelling his middle name wrong. What needs to be done to change his name legally to the one that he uses?

Name changes are done at District Court in Washington. You can look for more information at courts.wa.gov, which is the home page for Washington's courts.
The district court closest to where you live will have the necessary forms. This is not a problem that you need an attorney for.
He can use his SSN to demonstrate to the district court that he's known by a name that is not the same as what is on his birth certificate. Once the district court issues an order saying what his name will be formally, you can use that order to go back to the State and request that they issue an amended birth certificate consistent with the District Court's order re his name.
The District Court just needs to know that he isn't changing his name to evade creditors.
Really, what your husband needs is a way to make the Department of Health correct his birth certificate, and they can do that consistent with a court order.
Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell

It is easy, just go to the district court, ask to fill out the appropriate paperwork, get a court date, tell the judge your not changing the name for any nefarious purpose, and the court will issue an order for the change.
