Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

name change of a minor

I have a 13 year old daughter from a previous relationship, who has my last name. I have been with my fiance for 11 years and have 3 other children with his last name. We are not married so without adopting my daughter is it possible to change her last name to his? Her father does pay child support but is not involved in her life. If it is possible, how do I go about it?

Re: name change of a minor

Without the father's consent or a termination of parental rights you should not expect to be able to get a name change of a minor child. But if you wanted to try, you would have to have an order approving the name change from the Superior Court, although name changes are done in District Court, because Superior Court has jurisdiction over children in domestic law situations you would have to get approval there.
