Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

changing locks

We are not married, but have been living together in a home we purchased together 5.5 yrs. He left me for another woman. He comes into the house while I'm at work & starts taking his belongings out. I don't know who might be with him & I'm uncomfortable with it. I asked him to please wait till I am there....but he doesn't. Would it be legal for me to change the locks so he will have to come in while I'm home?

Re: changing locks

Yes, you can change the locks, but he can break in and change the locks to as he has at this point as much right to the property as you do under the facts you have described. You can file an action to divide your properties, and ask for an ex parte order to require that you both be involved in distribution of the property. This is could be a relatively simple process.
