my wife and I are having problems with my 17 year old step-daughter. she needs to live with her father who she gets along with but he refuses to take her. what are the reprocussions of us just dropping her of at his doorstep?

Well, that's awkward. Perhaps it is time for you three grown-ups to have a little, calm chat about what daughter needs and how he can help.

If ex still refuses, the other option is to have her go into foster care. Most reasonable decent parents would do ANYTHING rather than have the state involved in their child's life, so perhaps that will get his attention.

The other thing that happens with a switch in primary residence is the same switch in the child support obligation, e.g. you and your wife will be paying some support - perhaps a different amount than what you have been receiving - to him.

Their parenting plan has a dispute resolution section. Usually it will require the parties to go to mediation before going back to court. This can be very effective, even if the other party has his heels dug in hard and is refusing to budge.
