Re: Cohabitation in Washington

Washington will recognize a common law marriage if the parties entered into one in a state that recognizes it, and then moves to Washington State.

However, here in WA the Courts do not recognize common law marriage. That means that property owned separately will not be awarded to the other party but remain the property of the person who owned it originally.

A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed state policy to *NOT* create a marital-like community property where the parties did not marry. The decision raises some troubling new issues for the family law bar.

If you have been in a marital-like relationship and that relationship is now ending, you need to find and hire the best family law attorney you can locate.

Hope this helps. Powell
