Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

how do I get a court date postponed.

I just found out the court date and do not, nor can afford a lawyer at this time. I am still pursuing other options for a lawyer but do need to get a postponement filed very quickly. Received papers Saturday and court in this Tuesday.

Re: how do I get a court date postponed.

You can ask the court for a continuance based upon insufficient notice of the hearing. You can either seek help from the Family Court Coordinator or Family Court Services with this. Otherwise, you can appear at the hearing and request that it be continued for failure by the other party to give you sufficient notice. Normally, you have the right to 14 days notice in family law matters.
