Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
Custody Investigator
What can one expect when the court assigns a Custody Investigator? My friend is currently in court asking the court to limit the NCP's access to the two children. She has been a perfect parent, no documented marks against her, while the NCP has an extensive criminal record, is being charged for assault, and is currently on probation - also has a No Contact Order against him that the state issued to protect the children's mother. The court, according to the notes on www.courts.wa.gov, assigned a Custody Investigator (havent heard from such a person yet). It sounds like someone working on behalf of the courts that does background checks and looks at living conditions or something. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance, for your time.

Re: Custody Investigator
The custody investigator is asked to act as the 'eyes and ears of the Court' because the judge doesn't have time to come to your home and it would not be appropriate anyway.
The investigator can talk to the kids, talk to others involved and hopefully get the straight story on what is going on.
They are not your friend, although they can be friendly. Spending the visit complaining bitterly about how the ex is so awful doesn't make the interviewee more persuasive, it just makes them look bitchy, so be careful with that.
What they want to see is the close and loving relationship between the parent and the children, and that the parent is NOT bad-mouthing the other parent to the children.
I could go on about this for days. Hope this helps. Powell
