Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

divorce

I am an australian citezen married an american in Jamaica 3 years ago.Do I need to register my marriage in the USA before I proceed for divorce? Where the divorce will be filed?

We have been together for 8 years, I have been supportive of him as he was awaiting for a family trust fund. I believe his mother name is in it too, it seems that now that he got his money he does not want to honor his promises. I contributed to our relathionship in a disproportionated way, what are my chances of getting a fair settlement?

Re: divorce

The divorce can be filed where either of you is a resident. However, if you want to deal with property issues, and it appears you lack sufficient financial information about him, you need to file where he is, so you can require him to produce documents and answer your questions.

Your property issue, that you were the provider for the marriage because of his promise that when he received his inheritance (separate property, his alone not to be divided with you (California law)) presents an issue that I think you can win or lose. That is not, I think, straight forward. That issue will be your burden of proof, and if you can proof it to the satisfaction of the judge, maybe you are entitled to something.
