Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
divorce
My husband of 5 years wants a divorce because his daughter and sister are oppposed to the marriage. I quit my job, gave up a large income, sold almost of all of my possessions to move from my home in CA to an island in WA where he has a house. He has gone without me to seek advice and now wants a divorce. I don't, but if he files and gets one, how do I go about protecting myself and getting spousal support? I have not worked in many years and monies I had managed to save were in the stock market. I suffered a major loss when the market crashed. I am 63 years old.

Re: divorce
Why your husband wants a divorce is not legally relevant if he is willing to attest that the marriage is "irretrievably broken." This is not a long-term marriage, so any spousal support would probably be temporary and short term. The general goal of the courts in short term marriages is to get the parties back to where they were before the marriage. The fact that your assets were in the stock market and lost value is very possibly going to be treated by the court as a separate property issue not a community property issue (you get to keep your accounts). You may have some claim on the basis that you sold your possessions at a loss to marry him. The details make a difference, and of necessity there are relevant facts not in your statement.
