Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
Domestic Partnership property separation
I have been together with my boyfriend for almost 9 years. We have lived together for 8 years and he has helped me out when I was going to school and took care of me when I did not have a job for 2 years. He bought a house 3 years ago and said he bought it because I loved it. We moved in the house and since I wasn't working, I cooked, clean, and did all the domestic chores. We filed domestic partnership so that his company would provide me with health insurance because he was worried if something should happen to me. I finally landed a job the beginning of this year and we ended up having a joint account. On Sept 19th, he came home and told me he wanted to breakup. I was so shocked, I did not know how to react. I don't know what to do. I never thought he would do this to me and I thought we were on the path of marriage. Is there anything in the state of Washington that would entitle me to anything?

Re: Domestic Partnership property separation
Yes, Washington state courts does make provision for dissolution of relationships that were not marital relationships. Your long-term cohabitation, joint bank account and the domestic partnership filing would all be evidence documenting the relationship. The big question will be what and how much should each of you get in dissolution of the relationship.
