Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Grandparent's Rights

My 2 grandchildren are living inWashington. A different state from myself, but I have received information that they are not in a safe environment. Their mother, who was never married to my son, has a drinking and drug problem and is constantly bringing different men into the home. She also leaves them with her roommate who is an alcoholic. Can I go to their state and get the children? What are my legal rights as their grandparent? I dont want child services involved until I can be there, because I want to get the children, not have them placed in the state system. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Grandparent's Rights

Grandparents have few legal rights. You can report the situation to the Child Protective Services in Washington. If they take custody of the children you can apply to be the temporary guardians. Your son has rights as the children's father and may be able to exercise them to get the children out of a dangerous situation.
