Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

joint custody

Can I get joint custody of my kids in the State of WA. My attorney said that is not practiced anymore as the court wants the children involved in Divorce to have one residence they can call home. Is this true

Re: joint custody

Washington does not recognize joint custody, but parent can reach agreements. They usually don't because the primary residential parent receives child support and the non residential parent pays child support.

The legislature is currently evaluating changes to this idea and there may be changes on the horizon.

You might want to look into what's called the collaborative process of dissolution. Try googling that - there are ways to resolve a dissolution outside the court process that may give you the results you are looking for.

I hope this helps. Powell
