at what age can a child choose who they want to live with?

Children are considered infants (that's a term of art) in the eyes of the law until they reach their majority. They cannot make decisions or contracts until they become adults.
They cannot sue on their own behalf. Their parents are presumed to make the best decisions on their behalf unless or until the parent is declared not fit.
That is only going to happen when another adult - a guardian ad litem - investigates and reports facts to the court that help the court decide where the child is going to live.
At no time is the child making that decision.
I know there are rumors that children get to decide at age 12, or some other age, but it simply isn't true. and parents who encourage their child to change residences can get accused of alienating the child from the other parent, which opens up a whole new slew of problems.
