Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
Law(s) for official name change
My question is simple: What are the laws in my state and what are the Federal guidlines for legally changing one's name for reasons other than marriage?
I am a writer and wish to be known and legally and officially go by a new name. That is also to say that the old name would no longer be used as my legal name. Can anyone answer please this query?

Re: Law(s) for official name change
Changing your name requires you to go through a legal process in a court of law in your county. You may change your name as long as it is not done to deceive creditors or evade law enforcement people. After you go through the process, you need to notify Social Security of your new official name and meet their proof requirements and then you are done with them. You will also have to change your name on your driver's license, passport, and credit cards and other financial accounts, e.g., stock brokerage, 401 (k), etc.
