Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
Lawyers
I have been working with a lawyer for almost two years now. My Divorce was over in Dec 2006. The papers are still not done. I keep having to pay more. How can I get this ended so I dont go broke.

Re: Lawyers
That is kind of amazing. If the dissolution was over last year, there is no good reason why the final pleadings have not been filed. The Court takes a dim view of litigants who don't get it all done.
There is a decree, findings and conclusions, and if there are children additionally a parenting plan, order of support and worksheets and proof of completion of the parenting seminar.
What are you missing? You don't say, and I am unclear why this should cost you any more. The Bar has a fee dispute program where clients and lawyers can mediate fee disputes, if your lawyer thinks they have not been compensated. I can't tell whether your lawyer is asking for reasonable fees or not. It's hard to say.
Its also against the rules for other attorneys to communicate with persons they know to be represented, so I have probably said enough!
You can always fire your lawyer.
Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
