Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Legal Guardianship over Younger Brother

My mother passed away 3 years ago and my dad has been gone since I was eight. My youngest brother is only 15 and lives in sacramento. I live in Washington State and would like to become his legal guardian so he can live with me and go to school here. At the moment my mom's youngest brother is the legal guardian, but he has my little brother living somewhere else. Where should I start?

Re: Legal Guardianship over Younger Brother

If you want a fast response, consider contacting Child Protective Services in Sacramento.

I can't tell from your question with whom your 15 year old brother is living. He's not with his guardian? Why not? Was there a third-party custody action awarding the guardian custody of your brother, or was it more informal than that?

California has jurisdiction over your 15 year old brother until he has not lived there for six months, then a new state can step in. Until then, your case is in California.

You can go there and request that your brother be placed with you.

If that isn't enough direction, you can call Mike Aranoff in Tacoma is licensed in both WA and CA.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
