marriage dissolution

i was married in january of 1979 my husband was in the navy he went to sea in april of 1979 and i have not seen him since is it mandatory to get a divorce before i marry someone else now over 27 years after last seeing or speaking with him?

Although your marriage would appear to fall within the concept called defunct marriage. I would still recommend getting a dissolution of the marriage, as it provides you with a court order (decree) dissolving your marriage. Defunct marriage case law is the result of litigation that would be much more expensive than doing an uncontested dissolution.
