Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Not married Lived Together for 4 years

I have been living with a man like I am his wife, and a mother to his kid. The man and I are not married.

The situation is getting unbearable. I have been unemployed for years, now, and only worked as a ''housewife'' while living with this family. If I leave can I be entitled to some financial support until I can afford to live on my own?

Re: Not married Lived Together for 4 years

If it is unbearable you need to find assistance from whatever domestic violence counseling you can find. Look on line; contact your county court (also on line) and ask to talk to the domestic violence advocate or family law coordinator.

You may or may not be entitled to support from him and you may or may not be entitled to a property division to compensate you for the contributions you have made to this man's household over the last four years.

The critical part for you is getting out. You need more support than any lawyer can give you on line. Go to courts dot wa dot gov and check on the link for Trial Courts and find your local court. Chances are they have a website. Go see what you can find there.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
