Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Nonparental custody

A friend of ours has sole custody of his infant son and wants to place him for adoption and has asked us to take temporary nonparental custody. What is the simplest way to do this?

Re: Nonparental custody

Your question raises more questions than it asks.

Easiest way to do what? For what purpose? How long is temporary? Does he have prospective adoptive parents lined up? Where is the mother? Why don't you want to adopt? Is your interest only temporary? What about his relatives? What about mom's relatives?

The easiest way to take custody? Take the child home, feed it and change its diapers. Call it babysitting. But if anyone else has an interest in the child, this could lead to problems.

If you want a court order, which is the only way to actually have custody, go to the Supreme Court website and do it yourself. http://www.courts.wa.gov/selfhelp/

Otherwise, you should have an attorney.
